On April 24, 2025 I had the honor of creating a live painting during A Night in the City of Light Gala, hosted by the World Affairs Council of Houston — a celebration of French culture, art, and global connection.
The evening brought together guests from many backgrounds to honor the spirit of the “City of Light,” and I was grateful to be part of it alongside a wonderful group of artists, thoughtfully curated by Kareem Marshall.
When I first began learning calligraphy, the Gothic script from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry opened a doorway into a world where text, time, and symbolism meet. For this special event, I returned to those origins—using the same Gothic script and drawing inspiration from the calendar pages, especially the blue lunettes that symbolize a shared sky connecting us all.
Under that sky, I reflected on the word révolution—a concept that is always evolving, imperfect, full of contradictions. A revolution can be personal or collective, and that impulse to rise and change is something we all share. I included the rooster, a historic symbol of French resilience and awakening, alongside the word révolution as a tribute to this spirit.
My artistic approach, called Calligraffiti, blends calligraphy, graffiti, and typography, weaving ancient scripts into contemporary expression.
Thank you to everyone who shared this beautiful evening — and special thanks to Kareem Marshall for bringing the artists together and creating such a dynamic, creative space.
Grateful for the inspiration, the conversations, and the connection under the same blue sky. And Thank you Rhina for being my private photographer.
