Chiribiquete

The Chiribiquete petroglyphs are an invaluable legacy of the pre-Columbian cultures of the Colombian Amazon, depicting human figures, hunting scenes, animals, and astronomical symbols. This project reinterprets them from a modern perspective through Calligraffiti, connecting past and present through art.

Calligraffiti merges calligraphy, typography, and graffiti. Calligraphy provides technical mastery, aesthetics, and historical depth; typography offers balance and visual order; and graffiti adds dynamic expression and creative freedom. This discipline breaks away from the strict rules of calligraphy and typography while transcending the clandestine nature of graffiti.

For years, I perfected the visual aspect of Calligraffiti, but I felt my strokes lacked personal meaning. I then drew inspiration from the Chiribiquete petroglyphs to infuse my calligraphy with symbolic and asemic significance.

Thus, I transformed these ancestral lines into a visual language rich in symbolism. Asemic writing emphasizes the break with conventional meaning, inviting an intuitive and profound connection with these strokes, which feel familiar yet mysterious.

My first calligraffiti work—an axis mundi shaped like a palm. Its branches, formed by Chiribiquete symbols, rise outward. At the center, a drop of water offers life. A red tear honors Maestro Omar Rayo—his perfect, sharp art set a ceiling I’ll always strive to reach.

The four sacred seeds —coca, jopo, tobacco, and yoco—
germinate through the red earth.
From their roots, the ancient song awakens.

The yellow jaguar sings,
in the company of men,
as the universe,
spiraling with signs and memory,
orders itself around them

Jardín is part of the Chiribiquete series, though it doesn’t include its symbolic language. Instead, it speaks to the breath of the world I sense when I return to my country—to the overwhelming sounds and the intensity of life in the garden of my father’s house.

Ancestral symbols orbit the figure of Beethoven, inspired by Josef Müller-Brockmann’s Bauhaus-style poster. I divided the work into four parts: Beethoven #1, #2, #3, and #4. Each segment forms part of a circle, inviting new interpretations—both individually and as a whole.

Is a seed sprouting. From its base flows the cosmic canoe, while above, the wind breathes life. A tree emerges, its trunk linking sky and earth. In front, a knot of water flows: a vital source that connects and nourishes everything from the sacred center.

Jaguar

Ráfaga is the final and largest piece in my Chiribiquete series. Painted directly on the floor, the process was immersive—I sat at the center, pivoting as I worked, letting my body guide each stroke. It was no longer just my hand or arm, but my entire being acting as a tool. The work emerged through physical movement, as if ancient forms moved through me. Ráfaga is the sensation of symbols swirling around me, like a dance of memory and energy. More than a painting, it is a record of presence—an intuitive, sacred gesture beyond words.
