General Artist Statement

Me interesa cómo los seres humanos organizamos la vida en común. Observo las estructuras y los sistemas que creamos y cómo estos moldean nuestras relaciones entre nosotros y con el mundo que nos rodea. I am a painter working through calligraffiti, an art form that combines calligraphy, typography, and graffiti. In my practice, these three elements operate as interdependent systems.

Calligraphy introduces gesture and time. The energy of the gesture enters the mark through movement, direction, pressure, rhythm, and variation, while time enters through sequence, repetition, accumulation, and layering. My research looks for marks and traces across different forms of human expression, leading me to letters and scripts, pictograms, asemic forms, and, more recently, systems of notation used to record movement and sound.

Typography organizes the work through formal and conceptual systems. Conceptual structures organize ideas, information, and relationships and may come from human rights, laws, agreements, or systems used to write, record, and transmit experience. Formal structures organize the painting visually and may come from geometry, grids, patterns, or proportion. Their relationship establishes the logic of each work.

Graffiti brings scale and surface, giving the mark a physical presence in space that shapes the conditions of encounter. This presence establishes a relationship with architecture: a large painting requires a different space and positions bodies differently than a book or a smaller work. Live painting changes the organization of that space by introducing the act of making, while an artist talk introduces speaking, listening, and discussion. Each format produces a different relationship between the work, the architecture, and the bodies that occupy it.

Living together is a continuous gesture in time, a negotiation that organizes and reorganizes the structures of encounter. My work is a way of thinking through this negotiation: what our bodies do, the systems we construct, and the world we move through.
